Snow avalanche kills two in Uttarakhand

DEHRADUN: A woman and a youth were killed by a snow avalanche in Dehradun district, disaster management authorities said here today.

30-year-old Jimo Devi and 19-year-old Khajan along with three other residents of Lohari village were going towards Bagni village to celebrate Magh festival yesterday when they were hit by the avalanche near Chuirmari Dhang in the district and fell into a 300 metre deep gorge, they said.

The youth died on the spot while the woman succumbed by the time she was rescued by Army personnel and brought out of the gorge, they said, adding the three others accompanying them had a narrow escape.

The area still lies buried under 3 ft of snow, they said.
